3 Favorite Sustainable House Design Features

Exploring sustainable house design features is the natural next step in creating a truly nourishing home. Once you have removed the toxins from your home and aligned your interior space with your vision, incorporating these house design features is a great next step.

Renewable Energy Source

By far one of the most effective ways to make your home more sustainable is to install a renewable energy source. Solar is usually the most familiar and accessible for homeowners, and Lightwave Solar is a phenomenal company here in Nashville, TN. In addition to going solar in your home, consider making the switch to an electric or hybrid car. With gas prices at a premium, it’s never been a better time to make the switch. Can you imagine charging your car at home for free with the power from your solar panels?

Smart Home Solution

Making the investment in a smart home solution is a great way to reduce energy consumption and increase your awareness of usage. These apps also allow you to program lighting for your circadian rhythm and create “room scenes” for different tasks such as entertaining, cleaning, and more. Additionally, these systems can often integrate seamlessly with your renewable energy source.

Reimagine Your Landscaping

Taking a different approach to your landscaping is one of my favorite ways to make a home more sustainable. These solutions can include…

  • Growing a vegetable garden

    • A great way to ensure you get more time in nature and cut back your reliance on harmful agricultural practices. Plus, it doesn’t get much fresher than homegrown produce!

  • Rewilding your yard

    • Stop wasting precious water resources on large swatches of land that do nothing for the local environment. Instead, rewild your yard and include native species that will support wildlife. You can also choose plants that address your area's climate needs, such as fire risk or erosion prevention.

  • Look up! Install a green roof

    • These gorgeous roofs are covered with native plants. Not only are these roofs incredibly insulating but they also support the wildlife in your area.
