How To Remove The Toxins From Your Home

If you’re looking for advice on how to remove the toxins from your home, you’ve come to the right place. Here at MOTIV Interiors, we believe in creating sophisticated and sustainable homes, and as part of our mission, we love helping people clear their homes of toxins that can cause long-term health effects. Thanks to science, we know that our bodies are constantly absorbing the materials we surround ourselves with. Whether it’s the cleaner on your floors, the music pumping in your air, food on your table, or the flame retardant in your mattress, your body is taking in ALL of it. You may not even be aware of these toxins in your home, yet they play a part in your overall well-being and ability to really lean into and receive abundant life.

Let’s dive into five simple ways you can begin the process of removing toxins from your home today. And when you’re finished, grab my free in-depth guide to removing the toxins from your home

Toxin-Free Furniture

The furniture in your home is one of the biggest sources of toxins. From synthetic fibers covering your sofa to the glazes on your wood furniture and more, these elements off-gas toxic compounds into your home for YEARS. When shopping for furniture, choose pieces created from natural fibers (don't forget to check the filling on upholstered furniture). Leather is a beautiful, long-lasting material choice for upholstery—to keep your home non-toxic and eco-friendly, opt for a vegetable-dyed vs. aniline-dyed leather, and choose an organically tanned leather or hide.

Always opt for vintage or antique furniture pieces. The quality is better than anything you’ll find in a big box store, and you avoid contributing to the extremely harmful practice of fast furniture. Quality antique and vintage furniture frames are often worth restoring or reupholstering. An experienced interior designer can provide fabric options and connect you with the best trade person for the job.

Clear Out Toxins From Your Bathroom

When it comes to the bathroom, we’ve been conditioned to associate a fake lemony smell or the smell of bleach with cleanliness. Yes, it “smells clean,” but that’s the smell of toxins entering your lungs and taking up residence within your body. If your brain is missing the “smell” of clean (it’s a hard habit to kick), I recommend using just a few drops of essential oils in your cleaning water, added to a spray bottle to wipe down surfaces, or simply diffused in the room after cleaning.

I love “Wild Orange” and “Northern Escape” essential oils from DoTerra to replace the smell of Orange Clean and Pine-Sol…of course, you can experiment with your own favorites.

Remove Toxins From Your Kitchen

Whether you’re looking at a kitchen remodel or hoping to find an alternative to plastic baggies, there are so many options these days for creating a sustainable, toxin-free kitchen.

If you’re looking for a quick, toxin-free update, several manufacturers make eco-friendly laminate countertops with water-based binders, which are perfect for low budgets and last forever. The “standard” product will have far more toxic binders than these options.

I have laminate countertops in one space of my home from the 1980s, and they still look fabulous. So, a 42-year-old countertop that still looks and functions great is nothing to scoff at, folks.

For your day-to-day use, replace plastic baggies and Tupperware with silicone bags, stainless steel, or glass containers. Thrive Market is one of my favorite places to purchase these products if you do not have a health food store near you.

Cleaning Products That Are Actually Clean

Making a simple swap for natural cleaners is a great way to remove toxins. I recommend swapping your conventional cleaners for a clean brand such as 7th Generation, which you can find in just about any store these days.

Make sure to avoid any products that advertise an added scent or claim to “eliminate odors.” That’s usually a red flag that it’s full of harmful chemicals. If you’d like to see how your cleaning products are rated as far as safety and toxins go, you can check them on the Environmental Working Group’s verified list and see how healthy your cleaning products actually are.

Plants: The Super Toxin Removers

Plants are not just a design fad. While they are beautiful, they are also phenomenal at cleaning the air in your space. I recommend that you have at least one plant in every room of your house. So, go ahead and swing by the garden store when you’re out and about today and pick up a new plant friend to bring home.
