Minimize Light Pollution With Dark Sky Lighting

While light pollution is a global problem, most of us have accepted it as a part of modern life. However, by minimizing light pollution with dark sky compliant lighting, you can help both wildlife and humans. So, let’s dive into what light pollution is and the simple changes you can make to your home to combat it.

What is light pollution and how does it affect us?

National Geographic describes light pollution as “the excessive or inappropriate use of outdoor artificial light.” Some of the signs of light pollution are the inability to see the stars at night or confused wildlife wandering into areas that are not safe for them. The “sky glow” not only confuses wildlife and makes it impossible to stargaze, but it also wreaks havoc on our circadian rhythms and sleep patterns.

What is dark sky compliant lighting, and how does it help?

Dark sky compliant lighting consists of fixtures and systems set up to reduce or eliminate sky glow, direct glare, and circadian-disrupting light colors altogether. Design features such as light directed downward or timers that turn off lights automatically can dramatically reduce light pollution and its effects.

How to know if your fixtures are dark sky compliant

If you’re ready to replace your fixtures with dark sky compliant ones, here are a few key factors to look for:

  • The light should only be on when needed. Most smart home systems allow you to program outdoor as well as indoor lighting. You can also have it set to an occupancy sensor.

  • Only light the area that needs it. Think about the walkway from your driveway to your door, and consider removing any uplighting on your landscaping.

  • Be no brighter than necessary. Those giant floodlights are overkill, my friend.

  • Minimize blue light emissions. I talk about the importance of color temperature extensively in my Free Guide To Removing Toxins From Your Home. The same theories apply to outdoor lighting.

  • Be fully shielded (pointing downward). This simple design feature is incredibly effective at reducing sky glow.
