Top Tips for Hiring an Interior Designer

Your home is a big investment, and partnering with the right professionals is crucial, so we’re sharing our top tips for hiring an interior designer. As you go through this list, please note that we recommend always interviewing 2-3 designers before making your final decision.

Review their portfolio

You should be able to review a sample of an interior designer’s work on their website, or they should be able to provide you with a sample easily. As you review their portfolio, you should feel aligned with at least a handful of designs or design elements in their repertoire. Interior design is subjective, and while your designer will aim to please you, you should also select where your styles align.

Check client reviews thoroughly

From Google to Houzz and reviews on their website, make sure to read through as many reviews as possible. While no one is perfect, and renovating a space is never as smooth as anyone hopes it could be, do your best to watch for any red flags, including…

  • A client who paid a deposit but services were not completed or rendered.

  • A client who didn’t feel they were seen or heard regarding their vision.

  • A review from a client who says they have worked with “many designers” and it has been “a disaster every time” could indicate trust or communication issues coming from the individual writing the review.

  • Good to look for: Involvement in professional organizations, additional certifications, and an associate or bachelor degree in interior design.

Ensure that you align with their values

Your interior designer will be with you every step of the way to reimagine your sacred spaces and suggest the products, furniture, and finishes that you will be living with for years to come. During the interview process, make sure to ask the designer what their core values are as a company as well as their values when it comes to design.

If you’re looking for an interior designer that places a high value on creating nourishing spaces that are both sustainable and sophisticated, we’d love to hear from you. Schedule your Connection Call today, and let’s discuss your next project.
