At MOTIV Interiors, we love incorporating Feng Shui into our design projects. The three main principles that we weave in are:

  • the flow of chi (space planning, life force energy, air and sound movement)

  • balancing the masculine and feminine energies in your home (think invigorating vs. restorative) and

  • creating harmony using the 5 elements (fire, earth, metal, water and wood).

While this practice is nuanced, there’s no reason you can’t start small by introducing key pieces and impactful accents into your own space.

I’ve curated 5 collections - one for each element - each with a brief overview so you can begin recognizing these elements in your day-to-day life and start curating in your own home.

Fire Element Collection

The fire element is my personal favorite (as a Sagittarius) and is often considered the initiation energy of the cycle of the 5 elements - the spark that begins it all. So what does that mean for your home’s decor?

The fire element is connected to fame, inspiration, and our visibility. If you’re looking to channel more of this energy, add the color red to your space, triangular and arrow shapes, or animal prints and leather. Of course, actual fire is the strongest expression - candles, warmer lighting, or a fire feature all work great.

Earth Element Collection

When you think of the grounding Earth element, you will want to envision your overall well-being, self-nourishment, and boundaries. It’s all about connecting with your foundations and feeling “solid”.

Ceramics and pottery, natural stone, or square and rectangular shapes will bring this element into your space. Opt for those soothing, neutral earth tones as part of the color palette in the room (brown or gray color families both work). Mountain landscapes are another great way to ground in your space with this element.

Metal Element Collection

The metal element is all about creating structure and organization out of chaos - it cuts through to the essence. While working with feng shui clients one-on-one, I love bringing in this element with metal finishes (stainless steel, copper, antiqued brass), round shapes, whites and pastels, and of course stunning geodes.

Bring this internally grounding and vibrant element in with a round metal tray on your bed, photography in a gorgeous metal frame, or a metal side lamp next to your reading chair where you can rejuvenate in your private space with a view to nature. Lean into your playful, vibrant inner child with this element!

Water Element Collection

The Water element represents abundance and flow of energy - both in and around you, and in and around your home. This element can be deeply supportive of your inner wisdom, your social life, and your career.

To shift the energy in these areas of your life, incorporate touches of blue or black, curved and sinuous shapes, glass and crystal, or even a small fountain or other water feature, as long as it has movement (avoid having standing/stagnant water anywhere in your home). This element is all about going with the flow!

Wood Element Collection

The Wood element promotes growth, vitality, expansion, and far-reaching vision. Think of a tree constantly reaching up and out, shedding layers as it grows and creating fresh new beginnings.

Wood furnishings and finishes, live plants, fresh flowers, and the color green are great go-tos for bringing this element into balance in your space. Textiles and any prints that feature plant life also bring in this element.
