3 Keys to A Stunning Bathroom Renovation
If you have ever attempted a bathroom remodel, you know it’s no joke. Today we are explaining the three keys to a successful bathroom remodel. Follow these guidelines, and the result will be a bathroom you will love for years to come. As a bonus, it’s important to keep in mind that bathroom renovations, when done correctly, always result in a return on investment and an increased property value.
Key 1: Intentionally chosen elements
There are many important factors to consider when remodeling a bathroom, and each element should be intentionally chosen. When it comes to a bathroom, every finish and selection must carry its own weight — practically and aesthetically. This is partially because it is a highly functional area but also because there is a risk of water damage if one element is not done properly. In our Cabin(ette) project, we chose a stunning porcelain subway tile by Milestone Tile and paired it with accent tiles in Flashlight Black from Red Rock Tileworks in Nashville to create a classic black and white scheme. Porcelain tile is non-porous (vs. standard ceramic tiles, which are porous), ensuring that these tiles can stand up to the owner's active lifestyle, dog baths, or potentially even children down the road. The stunning Brut Double Light Wall Sconces by Michael Berman for Robert Abbey are essentially functional pieces of art, illuminating the space while also providing a sculptural element to the design.
Key 2: Make every inch count
Typically, space is at a premium in bathrooms, which means every inch counts in making the spaces highly functional. In our Binary Bathroom Remix, we designed custom cedar vanities to fit the two new spaces. Oftentimes, big box store vanities simply won’t work for maximizing the space in a historic or custom home, which means a bespoke design is the way to go. This allowed us to provide the clients with additional drawers and storage within a vanity that can maximize every available inch. Other ways you can make every inch count in the bathroom include…
A built-in medicine cabinet
Breaking up a double vanity but placing a cabinet between two smaller mirrors
Installing a beautiful tub/shower combination instead of opting for an oversized tub that rarely is used or a small shower stall that feels claustrophobic
Key 3: Don’t be afraid to go bold
If you’re nervous about experimenting with color, a bathroom is the perfect place to go bold. One bold decision can go a long way for a design, which means you can play it relatively safe with the other design features. In our Cabin(ette) project, we chose a brilliant jewel-toned blackberry color to punch up the classic black and white selections. Our bold move in the Binary Bathroom Remix was the choice of cedar doors, vanities, and accent walls. Wallpaper can be a great option for a bold bathroom or powder room choice; we used a print from Aimee Wilder in a recent ensuite refresh; and it set an amazing tone for the whole space.
