Keys To Designing a Family Home: Twin Rooms on 12 South in Nashville, TN

At MOTIV Interiors, we love empowering our clients who have young kids with the keys to creating family homes. For our Twins on 12th project, we worked with an amazing family whose kids were growing up quickly and their rooms needed an overhaul. For this project, we brought our signature blend of creating an inviting, personality-packed design and robust organization to ensure this home in the 12th South neighborhood in Nashville, TN, serves this family for years to come.

The Challenge: Designing a Family Home That Can Grow

In our Twins on 12th project, we were focused on reimagining the two rooms the 8-year-old twins were rapidly outgrowing. We were excited to create a space that could capture each of their unique personalities, grow with their interests, and function flawlessly. Focusing on flexible storage solutions and some gorgeous foundational pieces, we wanted to curate a space that these twins would take ownership of and love to be in from 8 years old to 18 years old.

The MOTIV Approach: Organizing The Twins’ Rooms

Organizing the kids' rooms was going to be key to making these spaces work. Kids have STUFF and usually lots of it. Unfortunately, their stuff doesn't necessarily get smaller as they grow older. Both rooms were designed with cubby storage and outfitted with baskets. This makes it easy for the kids to toss in odd-shaped toys and keep them from spilling back out onto the floor. Both rooms also received desks for the kids to work on homework, play games, and craft. Her desk was outfitted with drawers and, for his room, we added a set of bookshelves for even more storage.

A combination of flexibility and functionality is key to organization in kids’ rooms. While they currently hold action figures and ponies, these baskets will also house art supplies, sports equipment, and more as their interests change. We always opt to go without characters or age-specific themes when choosing furniture and fixtures in kids' rooms. It is much easier for parents and kids to update a throw blanket with their child’s new interest than it is to replace a superhero-shaped bed frame.

The Reveal: Personality Packed Designs

By including the kids in the design discussions, they really took ownership of their spaces after the renovation. In Her Room, the star of the show is a beautiful hand-printed wallpaper by Brooklyn designer Aimee Wilder, whose hand-painted, FSC-certified papers contain no VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). That means that they meet our standard for excellent indoor air quality in addition to packing a powerful visual punch. For a design feature in His Room, I custom-designed a geometric wall that anchors the space while adding movement and serves as a command center for our little explorer.

It’s important to keep in mind that adding personality to a design is so much more than a feature wall. It’s the style of furniture, the fabric in the window treatments, the placement of the furniture, and more. All of these elements, when done correctly, seamlessly come together to create a room layered in personality, depth, and nuance.
