Organize Your Home for a Sophisticated Design
When trying to achieve a sophisticated design, organizing and decluttering your space is critical. Creating an organized space clear of clutter is proven to reduce stress and reflects Deepak Chopra’s musing, “What we see, we become.” When you are surrounded by physical clutter or chaos, it will always create mental clutter and chaos.
If you’re ready to create better energy flow and curate a sophisticated design aesthetic, then begin with my three keys to organization and decluttering.
Begin by decluttering.
When you look at sophisticated spaces you admire, no matter the style or color scheme, one thing they will all have in common is a distinctive lack of clutter. When you begin by decluttering, you’ll have a fresh beginning and a much easier time creating organizational systems and the aesthetic you want to achieve. There are several approaches to decluttering.
There is a reason why Marie has a best-selling book and a smash hit on Netflix. The KonMari Method gives a methodical and simple approach to decluttering your entire home that will change your view of organization forever.
Take It One Space at a Time
This will prevent overwhelm and allow you to work at your own pace. Start with a small area that is not very sentimental, such as a pantry or linen closet, which will give you a quick win and some great momentum.
Maintenance Method
Start by setting a timer and a goal of decluttering for 10 minutes a day. The best part about this method is that you’ll create a habit that will serve you well for years to come.
Create Custom Storage Solutions
A customized approach to organizing your space is another critical element in creating a sophisticated design. As a rule of thumb, if you’re not using a space, then it’s not utilized well. Eliminate “catch-all” drawers and closets to ensure every area has a distinct purpose. Also, now is the time to eliminate any piecemeal organizational systems you have accumulated over the years.
Think about how you actually live and work in the space. When it comes to storage, consider what you are storing, the best way to categorize, and the ease of access needed.
Do you hardly ever use the front door and enter through the garage instead? Install a coat rack or hook system near it. Never make yourself carry items across the house unnecessarily in order to store them. That's how things end up on the floor or shoved into nooks and crannies.
Install Organizational Systems
When everything has a place, it will end up back in its place. Consider replacing pedestal sinks in bathrooms with vanities that have drawers and doors that close. If you enjoy a minimalist look, select furniture pieces that require all the storage you will need in that space. One larger piece of furniture will feel quite sophisticated compared to three or four smaller pieces scattered around.
For storage containers, choose a material theme (metal, rattan, wood) and search on Etsy or at antique stores for similar storage boxes that will play nicely together. This results in a curated look that is unique and interesting.
Custom closets are the way to go to avoid pile-up. Working with an interior designer is helpful as we can take into account how you would like to use the space and accommodate your specific needs.
