The Five Elements of Feng Shui
Whether you’re new to feng shui or diving deeper into this ancient practice, understanding the five elements of feng shui is critical. When we realize that these five natural elements make up all matter on our planet and are constantly transforming in an infinite cycle, that really puts their importance into perspective. Think about the building blocks that make up your physical body—bone, muscle, blood, skin—they have all been built from and nurtured by natural elements, and we hold these vibrations within our DNA.
Each element (fire, water, earth, metal, and wood) promotes certain energy. You can use these elements to shift the energy in your space, which in turn affects your relationship with yourself, others, and nature. By using the bagua map and the five elements, you can create a home that will truly nourish you.
Let’s dive into each element to discover how they affect your space, energy, and mood.
Fire Element
The Fire element is connected to fame, inspiration, and our visibility. If you’re looking to channel more of this energy, add the color red to your space, triangular and arrow shapes, or perhaps a small candle, warmer light, or even use an animal print or leather.
Earth Element
When you think of the Earth element, you will want to envision your overall well-being, self-nourishment, and boundaries. Try using ceramics and square shapes in your space, or opt for a cream or neutral earth tone as part of the color palette in the room.
Metal Element
It probably won’t surprise you that the Metal element promotes energy, beauty, joy, and efficiency. Maybe that’s why there are so many metal accents in Art Deco design! While the thought of adding metal to your space can sound daunting, this can be something as simple as a side table or a couple of lamps. Small decorative accessories are also great for bringing the metal element into your space and brightening the mood.
Water Element
The Water element represents wisdom, your social life, and your career. To shift the energy in these areas of your life, incorporate touches of blue or black, curved elements, glass, or even a small fountain.
Wood Element
The Wood element promotes growth, vitality, expansion, and far-reaching vision. Think of a tree constantly reaching up and out. Wood furnishings and finishes, live plants, and the color green are great go-tos for bringing this element into balance in your space.
