Top Tips for Styling a Coffee Table

We’re sharing our step-by-step process and top tips for styling a coffee table! Because who doesn’t love a perfectly curated coffee table? Answer: We all do!

While we all can spot when a coffee table is styled correctly, it can be tricky to make the magic happen on your own. So, let’s dive into how to style your own perfect coffee table.

Create a visual anchor for your coffee table

An anchor will draw the eye in and ground your arrangement. I love to start with a large tray or a stack of three coffee table books. I always prefer white for a coffee table book, but feel free to bring in colors that match your scheme.

When searching for coffee table books, visit your local art museum (that would be The Frist for you, Nashville friends), local bookstores (Parnassus is my fav here in town), vintage stores and special collections on eBay, or Chairish. These are all great places to shop for your perfect visual anchor.

Anchors can be great conversation starters and serve as functional pieces of art. Also, keep the scale of your room and coffee table in mind, making sure to leave enough negative space around the books to keep it looking chic.

Bonus Tip: A tray can be incredibly helpful in delivering snacks and drinks, so opt for one that is easy to clean if you plan on serving food and beverages.

Divide and contain with a gorgeous box

Having access to the necessities, such as a TV remote or set of coasters, is just part of modern life. The goal is to keep them close at hand AND beautifully hidden, which is why I always recommend investing in a beautiful box for these items.

Also, a box offers a finite amount of space, so it can’t overflow with knickknacks the way a tray can.

This is the perfect chance for you to support local artisans and search at a local craft fair (or even have a custom piece commissioned). Peruse antique stores for well-loved pieces that will add a beautiful patina and a collected look to your space. And, of course, work with your interior designer to source the perfect trade-only piece.

This step seems simple but should NEVER be skipped as it has a huge impact. It’s critical, both visually and energetically, to keep your space beautiful, organized, and clutter free.

Add a touch of nature

Not only does a vase of flowers or herbs bring life into your space, but it will add height to your coffee table arrangement. Height makes the styled table more interesting and sculptural as a whole. Look for a shorter vase with a wide base so it is less likely to spill or splash if bumped into in passing.

Pottery is a great option, and it is readily available at local craft fairs and antique stores. We love Paper & Clay out of Memphis for elegant modern pieces. Also, Phillips Collection is one of our favorite trade-only vendors with incredibly unique pieces.

Remember to keep it simple! While a dining table can command a large arrangement, you just need a few flowers or herbs for a coffee table. Stick to a small, simple arrangement that will complement the space without overpowering it.

What to avoid when styling your coffee table

Now that you’ve got the basics, let’s cover a short list of tips to avoid common styling mistakes:

  1. Unless you have an extra-large coffee table, avoid anything tall or top-heavy that might get bumped into or tipped over.

  2. Keep your palette simple so it doesn’t draw too much attention away from the rest of the space.

  3. Don’t be afraid to experiment and have fun!
